General Manager: ACES

Bert "Fred" Sanford

As General Manager of the Advanced Capabilities and Expert Solutions (ACES) business unit at Tactical Air Support, Bert has supported various ACES roles since joining in 2016. Initially founded on the model of the US Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) and US Air Force’s Weapons School, Tactical Air Support is redefining government contracting as a non-traditional defense company focused on value-based, innovative, and technology-driven products and services for the US Armed Forces.

With a cadre of over 100 training professionals, Bert leads the industry’s largest collection of current Subject Matter Experts (SME) on Fourth and Fifth Generation Strike Fighter, Electronic Attack, Early Warning, Maritime strike, and the integration of modern weapon systems. ACES bridges the gap from engineering development to Fleet operations.

Prior to working at Tactical Air, Bert served 24 years in the U.S. Navy flying as an F-14 Radar Intercept Officer and F/A-18F Weapons System Officer including four overseas combat deployments. He later transitioned to the acquisition community and served as Operational Test Coordinator for the APG-79 AESA radar and multiple F/A-18 software upgrades. He then served as Assistant Air Officer on USS Truman (CVN-75). He took his depth of aircraft carrier experience back to test community and spent the next five years as the Operational Test Coordinator for the USS Ford (CVN-78) class of aircraft carriers, which was the Navy’s largest acquisition program.

His aviation experience includes over 2500 flight hours in high-intensity aviation operations. As combat strike lead, Bert led 32 of 49 missions totaling over 180 hours in direct support of Operations DENY FLIGHT, SOUTHERN WATCH, DESERT FOX, and IRAQI FREEDOM. Bert is an expert in air-to-air warfare, air-to-ground warfare, and tactical reconnaissance.

Bert has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration/Finance from Old Dominion University, Aviation Safety and Risk Management course completion from the Naval Postgraduate School, an Advanced Certification in Structured Writing for Technical Documentation from Clemson University, a Project Management Certificate from Syracuse University and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
